Our Story
Blue Ridge Canine Safehouse is a veteran-owned, woman's small business. My kennel serves the rescue and shelter communities in three different ways. I offer restorative boarding (short and longterm), behavior modification, and sanctuary care. I specialize in behavioral modification and emotional rehabilitation for rescue dogs. We use science-based, fear-free techniques and believe that changes happen in the mind and the heart of the dog, rather than in the mere outward behavior.
I grew up loving dogs and then made dogs my career when I became a Detection K9 Handler and Trainer. I pursued this career path for almost 9 years traveling all over the world, but found that my heart lies in my community where I grew up - the Blue Ridge Mountains. The property on which I built this business was once the site of horrendous acts of horror and torture. Dog hoarders had amassed almost 50 dogs, most of which perished, suffering unimaginable deaths. With the help of friends and family, we vowed to change the energy of this place. We set to work burying the remains of the dogs found on the property so their souls may finally find peace. We filled dumpsters with run down dog houses, busted chain link pens, and piles of garbage. We dozed the ground where the dog pens once imprisoned the suffering dogs. On that location, we erected a beautiful purpose-built kennel building complete with climate control, doggy doors that open up to covered verandas, and spacious kennel runs.
This property is now the home to many happy dogs - a boarding vacation for countless rescue dogs, a restorative center for dogs who have experienced trauma or shelter kennel stress, a stop-over for many homeless dogs before they're adopted, and a peaceful respite for a handful of sanctuary dogs. You can read their stories here. As a founder of the nonprofit, World Animal Guardians, I am committed to caring for the rescue dogs who come through our doors. Little by little we changed the energy of this place to something safe and peaceful. It is my honor and privilege to share this world with our dog friends.
